What is a Prior Year Tax Return?

A prior year tax return is a federal income tax return that you filed for a previous tax year. If you did not file a return for a particular year, you may still be able to file it now. The IRS generally allows you to file tax returns from many years ago. However, there are some exceptions to this rule. For example, if you are due a refund, you have three years from the original due date of the return to file it and claim your refund. If you owe taxes, you will accrue interest on any unpaid taxes until they are paid in full.

Why Would I Need to File a Prior Year Tax Return?

There are many reasons why you might need to file a prior year tax return. Maybe you didn’t realize you needed to file a return for a particular year because your employer didn’t withhold any taxes from your paychecks. Or maybe you didn’t make enough money in a given year to meet the IRS’s filing requirements. Whatever the reason, if you didn’t file a return for one or more years, it’s important to take action as soon as possible.
