Individual Tax Preparation: What You Need to Know Before Filing

Discover essential tips for individual tax preparation

When tax season rolls around, one of the most common questions people ask is: “Should I do my taxes myself or hire a professional?” If you’re considering individual tax preparation, this guide will walk you through the costs, benefits, and what to expect—so you can make the best decision for your financial health.

What Is Individual Tax Preparation?

Individual tax preparation is the process of filing personal income taxes—either by yourself using tax software or by hiring a professional such as a CPA, Enrolled Agent, or tax preparer. This process includes collecting W-2s, 1099s, receipts, and other relevant documents, identifying credits and deductions, and filing your tax return with the IRS and state authorities.

Whether you’re a salaried employee, a business owner, a freelancer, or self-employed, getting your taxes done right is crucial to avoid IRS issues and to maximize your refund.

Average Cost of Tax Preparation for Individuals

One of the top questions people ask is: How much does it cost for someone to prepare your taxes?

On average, the cost of tax preparation for an individual can range from $350 to $1500, depending on the complexity of your return. For example:

  • A simple 1040 with no itemized deductions may cost around $350–$500.

  • Adding a Schedule C (for self-employed individuals or side hustlers) can bump it up to $450–$650.

  • If you’re dealing with multiple states, investments, or rental properties, expect a higher fee.

These prices vary based on your location and whether you choose a large company, a local CPA, or a boutique firm like Molen & Associates.

Is It Worth Paying Someone to Do Your Taxes?

Short answer: Yes, in many cases it is—especially if your tax situation is more than just a W-2.

Professional tax preparers are trained to uncover credits and deductions you might miss, ensuring accuracy and often a larger refund or lower tax liability. Plus, they can help if you’re audited or receive letters from the IRS.

Think of it like hiring a mechanic—you could try to fix your car yourself, but it’s usually faster and safer to let a pro handle it.

Individual Tax Preparation Near Me: What to Look For

Searching for an individual tax preparer near me or individual tax preparation near me can return dozens of options. Here’s what to consider:

  • Experience & Credentials – Look for CPAs, EAs, or firms with a strong reputation.

  • Personalized Service – A firm that offers a personal interview (like Molen & Associates) will dig deeper into your situation.

  • Year-Round Support – Taxes don’t stop on April 15. Choose someone you can reach out to throughout the year. A proactive approach from an accounting firm is hard to find, but well worth it if you want to dig into tax strategies.

  • Education – A great preparer explains the why behind your numbers so you leave smarter than when you came in.

Who Has the Cheapest Fees for Filing Taxes?

If cost is your biggest concern, you might consider:

  • Free File through IRS.gov – Available for those with income under $73,000.

  • TaxSlayer or Credit Karma Tax – Often free for basic returns.

  • H&R Block or TurboTax – Typically charge slightly less than your average CPA or accounting firm.

So, who is cheaper: TurboTax or H&R Block?

In most cases, TurboTax is slightly more expensive than H&R Block. However, H&R Block charges extra for add-ons like live help or filing multiple states. Always check the final price before submitting.

Online vs In-Person: Which Is Better?

You might wonder, is it cheaper to do taxes online or in person? Generally, online is cheaper, but in-person services offer value in ways software can’t:

  • Human review catches more mistakes.

  • You get tailored advice for future tax planning.

  • Someone advocates for you if the IRS comes calling.

Especially for small business owners, real estate agents, or anyone with self-employment income, in-person is often worth the cost.

How Do People Get $10,000 Tax Refunds?

Large refunds usually result from over-withholding taxes from paychecks or qualifying for significant credits like:

  • Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)

  • Child Tax Credit

  • Education Credits (like the American Opportunity Credit)

  • Recovery Rebate Credit

Note: A big refund isn’t always a good thing—it means you gave the government an interest-free loan all year! A tax advisor can help you adjust your withholding to keep more money in your pocket throughout the year.

Is It Better to Go to a Accountant or H&R Block?

Here’s how they compare:

If you want a long-term relationship, personalized advice, and access to a team that knows your business and personal finances, a CPA or boutique firm like Molen & Associates is a better long-term investment.

Final Thoughts: Choose What Works Best for You

Whether you’re a first-time filer or someone who’s tired of doing it all yourself, individual tax preparation is not one-size-fits-all. Some people benefit from online tools, while others gain more from sitting down with a tax advisor.

At Molen & Associates, we believe in helping you feel like family, learn something new, and solve tax headaches before they start.

Let’s make this tax season your easiest yet. Contact us today to schedule a consultation—because you deserve more than just a tax return. You deserve a team that’s with you all year long.

What Is the $600 Tax Rule?

The $600 tax rule refers to the IRS requirement that payment platforms like Venmo, PayPal, and Zelle issue a 1099-K form if you receive more than $600 for goods and services.

This rule does not apply to personal payments (like splitting dinner with friends), but it does apply to side gigs, freelancing, and small business income. If you fall into that category, this income is reportable and taxable, even if you didn’t get a 1099.

If you are wanting honest and sincere tax preparation, this is where you need to go. We have worked with other well know tax preparation companies and ended up at the bottom of their priority list because we chose not to get the Platinum advance or whatever it was called this year. We had to file a previous year along with our current year. Brittany was awesome. She was able to calm the nerves associated with filing taxes and tax preparation as a whole. She answered ALL of our questions and even asked questions that we would have never thought of. She made us feel that there was nothing to worry about, She was looking out for us and not to get us. We will be asking for her again this next year. I'm definitely recommending Molen & Asociates to everyone I know. The fact that they are booked solid during tax season only confirms the fact that they are good at what they do.

Every year we have done business with Molen for our tax return prep and business advice, we leave with a sense of confidence that we have chosen the most qualified people to take care of us in all of Houston. We would like to extend our gratitude to Brittany for being thorough, friendly, and superb at doing her job. Although we have the option of handling everything electronically, we choose to go in for the final signing just to have that person to person friendly interaction.

I have used Molen and Associates for at least 15 years or more for my tax preparation. They are very professional and very friendly in all aspects of the process. I'm on my second tax preparer and feel that shows you they must be a good company to work for. I'm very happy with how my tax return is completed each year and how honest they are, I have no worries the IRS won't accept my return. I highly recommend Molen & Associates if you are looking for someone to do your taxes.

They have made filling our taxes less burdensome. It reassuring to know they are there every step of the way and they work hard to create lasting customer connections through accuracy and attention to detail.
