How We Can Help You

If you don’t qualify for the IRS Offer In Compromise program, a Payment Plan may be the way to resolve your problem. Setting up a payment plan with the IRS gives you a little more time to pay off your tax debts.

Unfortunately, penalties and interest will continue to be charged on your outstanding balance as you pay the debt off. You are required by law to pay the interest on your tax debt.

The good news is that there’s a chance we can get your tax penalties removed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Get clear answers to common questions about our tax preparation services.

What exactly is an IRS Payment Plan?

An IRS Payment Plan, officially known as an Installment Agreement, is a formal arrangement that allows you to pay your tax debt over a specified period. Instead of having to pay the full balance in one lump sum, you make monthly payments. This is often the best solution for taxpayers who want to be in “good standing” with the government and stop aggressive collection actions like wage garnishments or bank levies.

Do I need to have all my old tax returns filed before I can start a payment plan?
While both can prepare tax returns, CPAs (Certified Public Accountants) have extensive education, licensing, and can provide year-round tax planning and representation before the IRS. Our team includes experienced CPAs who offer comprehensive tax strategy, not just return preparation.
Can I set the monthly payment amount myself, or does the IRS decide?
It depends on how much you owe. If your debt is below certain thresholds, you may qualify for a “Streamlined” agreement where you can choose your payment amount as long as the debt is paid within a specific timeframe (usually 72 months). If you owe more or have a limited income, we can negotiate a “Partial Payment Installment Agreement” based on your actual monthly budget. Our goal is to ensure your payment is one you can actually afford without sacrificing your family’s basic needs.

Will interest and penalties stop growing once I’m on a payment plan?
This is a common misconception. While an approved payment plan stops the IRS from seizing your assets, interest and late-payment penalties will continue to accrue on the remaining balance until it is paid in full. However, the “Failure to Pay” penalty is often reduced once an installment agreement is in place. We can also review your history to see if you qualify for “Penalty Abatement” to lower the overall balance.
What happens if I set up a plan but then my financial situation changes?
Life happens—jobs change, and emergencies arise. If you can no longer afford your monthly payment, we can request a modification to your agreement. It is much better to proactively adjust the plan than to simply stop paying. With our 40+ years of experience, we know the right channels to contact to update the IRS on your financial status and prevent your plan from going into default.
Is there a fee to set up a payment plan with the IRS?
Yes, the IRS charges a one-time user fee to set up an installment agreement. The fee varies depending on whether you apply online, by phone, or in person, and whether you choose to have payments automatically deducted from your bank account. Low-income taxpayers may qualify for a reduced fee or even a waiver. We help you identify the most cost-effective way to establish your plan.
What is a "Partial Payment Installment Agreement" (PPIA)?

A PPIA is a unique type of plan for taxpayers who truly cannot afford to pay the full amount they owe before the 10-year collection statute expires. In these cases, we provide the IRS with a detailed look at your income and expenses to negotiate a lower monthly payment. If the clock runs out before the debt is paid off, the remaining balance is typically forgiven.

Can I still get my tax refund if I’m on a payment plan?
Generally, no. Even if you are on a perfect payment schedule, the IRS will automatically apply any future federal or state tax refunds to your outstanding debt until it is paid off. This is called an “offset.” We can help you adjust your withholdings so that you aren’t overpaying during the year, allowing you to keep more of your paycheck rather than sending it to the IRS as an overpayment.
Why should I hire Molen & Associates to set up my plan instead of doing it myself?
While you can apply for a plan on the IRS website, you may end up with a payment that is much higher than necessary because the automated system doesn’t account for your unique life circumstances. We treat you like family, taking the time to analyze your full financial picture. We handle the paperwork and the phone calls, ensuring you get the most favorable terms possible while educating you on how to stay compliant for years to come.
